"The advantages of satellite communications" - London, RAF Norholt Station at 2 pm in the Hurricane Room.
|
| | Jesper Bękgaard, SATCOM 1, Director Special Programs, Denmark
| In today's world the aircraft cabin must provide everything you would expect in your own office to make travel time effective and the cockpit processes and workload must be optimized. Satellite communications can help both in the cabin and in the cockpit. With satellite equipment on board it is possible to stay connected in your office-in-the-sky. Not only can you use aircraft phones or even your personal phone to make calls, but also connect your personal laptop or PDA and send and receive emails as on ground, as well as surf the Internet or send a fax. In the cockpit, satellite communication can assist by providing EFB updates and the latest weather. Also satellite communications will enable the use of ACARS (Aircraft Communications, Addressing and Reporting Systems). ACARS is a digital data link system for transmission of short, relatively simple messages between aircraft and ground stations via radio or satellite. It is all about optimizing the planning of the flight including flight planning, position reporting, fuel savings etc. It has been used in the commercial industry for many years, but is now increasingly used in business aviation.
